IDR1123 — The Rationale for Identifier 1123

Why 1123?

The identifier 1123 was chosen because its digits form the opening terms of the Fibonacci sequence:

1, 1, 2, 3

Few four-digit numbers communicate their meaning as immediately and naturally. Since the U2D2 Fibonacci Encoding system is built upon Fibonacci values, 1123 provides an intuitive and memorable identifier for documents describing that system.

The identifier was selected first because of this direct relationship to the Fibonacci sequence. Additional mathematical properties discussed later on this page were discovered afterwards and further reinforced the choice.

Fibonacci Day

The date November 23 (11/23) is celebrated by many mathematicians, educators, museums, and science organizations as Fibonacci Day, since the date itself expresses the opening terms of the Fibonacci sequence:

11 / 23 → 1, 1, 2, 3

Fibonacci Day celebrates more than a mathematical sequence. It highlights the appearance of Fibonacci patterns throughout mathematics, nature, engineering, art, architecture, and computer science. It also encourages curiosity, creativity, and discovery—qualities that align closely with the educational goals of U2D2.

The coincidence that the identifier 1123 also corresponds to Fibonacci Day made it an even stronger choice.

FE1123 — Fibonacci Encoding and Decoding

FE1123 provides the practical tools used to encode and decode information through the U2D2 Fibonacci Encoding system.

The identifier directly reflects the mathematical foundation upon which the encoding system is built, making 1123 a natural choice for the webpage that introduces visitors to the encoding and decoding process.

WP1123 explains how Fibonacci-encoded binary strings can serve as surrogate hyperlinks within U2D2.

Additional Mathematical Relationships

Although the opening Fibonacci sequence was the primary reason for selecting 1123, the number possesses several additional mathematical properties.

Most notably, 1123 is itself a prime number. It can be divided evenly only by 1 and 1123, placing it among the fundamental building blocks of arithmetic.

Even more interesting, 1123 occupies the center position of a symmetric prime triplet:

  • 1117
  • 1123
  • 1129

The pairs 1117–1123 and 1123–1129 are examples of sexy primes, a traditional mathematical term describing two prime numbers separated by six (from the Latin sex, meaning “six”).

Together they form a beautifully balanced arrangement:

1117 ← 6 → 1123 ← 6 → 1129

While this relationship was not the original motivation for selecting 1123, it provides another example of the unexpected mathematical patterns that often emerge when numbers are explored more deeply.

The Zeckendorf Series

We have assigned FE1117, FE1123, FE1129, and WP1123 as the Zeckendorf Series within U2D2 in honor to Edouard Zeckendorf and Zeckendorf’s theorem, upon which the Fibonacci encoding scheme of U2D2 is based.

One additional page within the Zeckendorf Series is the “Zeckendorf Redirect” page (u2d2.com/zr/) , but since it is a special purpose page, explained within FE1117 and an unlisted U2D2 page, there is no further explanation here.

One Identifier, Multiple Layers

An identifier within U2D2 is more than a catalog number. It is part of the architecture of the project.

Sometimes an identifier is chosen because of a historical event. Sometimes it reflects a mathematical relationship, a scientific principle, a philosophical idea, or a connection to another document. Occasionally, additional relationships are discovered long after the identifier has been assigned.

The purpose of an IDR (Identifier Rationale) page is to preserve both the original intent and those later discoveries. In doing so, each identifier develops its own story, becoming another layer of the U2D2 ecosystem for readers who enjoy exploring its deeper structure.

An Unlisted U2D2 Page

IDR1123 is an Unlisted U2D2 webpage.

Unlike the primary FE, WP, and CBA pages, no live hyperlinks anywhere within the U2D2 website point directly to this page. Consequently, visitors will not ordinarily arrive here by following the site’s navigation or by clicking conventional links.

Instead, this page is intended to be discovered. Visitors may reach it by decoding a Fibonacci-encoded surrogate URL, following clues provided through Remote Tool Tips (RTTs), receiving a direct link from another person, or simply by experimenting with U2D2 URLs on their own. Or you may have even arrived here via an intermediary page called a Zeckendorf Redirect, which also utilizes Fibonacci encoding and decoding.

This approach reflects one of the underlying design philosophies of U2D2: not every layer of information needs to be presented immediately. Some layers are meant to reward curiosity, experimentation, and exploration. IDR pages are supplementary rather than essential—they enrich the experience for those who wish to look beneath the surface without interrupting the flow of the primary documents.

Although U2D2 itself intentionally contains no direct links to this page, it remains a publicly accessible webpage. Others are free to share its address or link to it directly. In that sense, an IDR page is unlisted, not secret. Discovery is encouraged, but not required.
