IDR1517 — The Rationale for 1517 Series
An Unlisted Discovery
Like all ID Rationale pages, IDR1517 is intentionally Unlisted. There are no direct links to this page elsewhere on the U2D2 website. Visitors typically arrive here through a Fibonacci-encoded “Remote Tool Tip” (RTT), a shared URL, or by intentionally exploring the site’s numbering system. Or you may have even arrived here via an intermediary page called a Zeckendorf Redirect, which also utilizes Fibonacci encoding and decoding.
These hidden pages reward curiosity by providing historical, mathematical, and conceptual context for document identifiers while allowing the primary papers to remain focused on their central ideas.
Why 1517?
The number 1517 serves as the architectural anchor for one of the central conceptual frameworks within U2D2. It commemorates the year in which Nicolaus Copernicus first described what later became known as the Quantity Theory of Money. Although Copernicus is remembered primarily for revolutionizing astronomy, he also recognized a profound economic truth: the quantity and quality of money influence prices and the functioning of an economy.
That insight provides the historical foundation for the 1517 Series.
Rather than treating monetary theory as a finished discipline, the U2D2 project views it as an evolving body of knowledge—one that begins with classical monetary thought and continues into the emerging era of decentralized economic systems.
The Four-Paper Architecture
The 1517 Series is organized around four complementary papers, each addressing a different layer of monetary architecture.
FE610 revisits the classical Quantity Theory of Money, examining its historical development and enduring importance.
WP610 builds upon that foundation by proposing a broader understanding of money as Liquid Human Achievement (LHA), emphasizing that money derives its significance not merely from exchange, but from the creation, preservation, and transfer of human accomplishment.
FE907 extends monetary theory into decentralized systems by exploring how the Quantity Theory operates when currency creation is no longer controlled by a single central authority. It examines the relationship between monetary quantity, velocity, trust, and decentralized validation.
WP907 applies these principles through the introduction of Value-Linked Currency (VLC)—a new class of currency whose issuance is constitutionally linked to the creation of objectively verifiable value rather than debt, speculation, or discretionary monetary policy.
Together, these four papers describe a progression from classical monetary theory to a practical framework for decentralized constitutional economics.
Two Number Series, One Architecture
The structure of the series is reflected in its numbering.
The 610 Series is built upon the Fibonacci number 610, representing the development of foundational monetary theory and the evolving understanding of money itself. It is both a Fibonacci number and the smallest Fibonacci number that is also sphenic (610 = 2 × 5 × 61).
The 907 Series is built upon the prime number 907, representing the extension of those ideas into decentralized monetary systems and Value-Linked Currency.
Together these two numerical series converge in a simple and memorable relationship:
610 + 907 = 1517
The mathematics mirrors the architecture. The 610 papers establish the conceptual foundation. The 907 papers extend those concepts into decentralized implementation. Their sum identifies the larger series as a unified body of work rooted in the monetary ideas first articulated by Copernicus in 1517.
From Monetary Theory to Monetary Architecture
The purpose of the 1517 Series is not simply to explain how money functions. It is to explore how monetary systems themselves can be intentionally designed.
Traditional monetary theory has focused primarily on describing economic behavior. The U2D2 project expands that discussion by asking how monetary institutions might be engineered using constitutional principles such as distributed authority, transparent rules, independent verification, and carefully designed checks and balances.
In this sense, the series moves beyond monetary theory toward monetary architecture.
A Continuing Intellectual Tradition
The ideas explored throughout the 1517 Series build upon centuries of economic thought rather than attempting to replace it.
Beginning with Copernicus, monetary theory was later refined by economists including Irving Fisher and Milton Friedman. Friedrich Hayek anticipated many of the advantages of competing decentralized currencies decades before modern blockchain technology made such systems technically feasible.
Bitcoin demonstrated that decentralized monetary issuance could exist without a central bank. The U2D2 project explores a possible next stage of that evolution by asking how decentralized currencies might also be constitutionally governed, objectively linked to the creation of value, and integrated into broader systems of institutional accountability.
Whether these proposals ultimately prove successful remains to be seen, but they are intended as an extension of a long intellectual tradition rather than a rejection of it.
Why Four Separate Papers?
Although closely related, each paper serves a distinct purpose.
The Foundational Essays establish historical context, terminology, and underlying principles. The White Papers apply those principles to the design of new economic institutions and practical implementation.
This separation allows readers to explore either the theoretical foundations or the applied architecture independently while still understanding how the pieces fit together.
Why This Number?
Like many U2D2 identification numbers, 1517 was selected because it connects history, mathematics, and architecture into a single memorable framework.
The year 1517 marks the beginning of the intellectual journey represented by the series. The Fibonacci/sphenic number 610 and the prime number 907 identify its two complementary branches. Together they form a coherent architectural map that links the foundational theory of money with its proposed evolution into decentralized constitutional economics.
